It can be wonderful, especially in busy times, to clear your head on a walk. Just to be busy with nothing, that can be very therapeutic. Do you not have much experience yet and do you want to start walking? Then we have some tips to get you started.

Tips for the novice hiker

Walking is an easy activity if you want to get more exercise. All you have to do is get out the door at your convenience and you can make it as intense as you like. Although it may be tempting to go flat out when you start walking, the advice is: start slowly. For example, don’t start with long walks right away, but walk three times a week for half an hour at a leisurely pace. Listen carefully to your body when you’re busy, and slow down or take a break if you feel any pains.

If you feel comfortable, you can start your walk with a warm up. Loosen up your muscles and activate your circulation. A cool down afterwards can help calm your heart rate. To ensure that you walk comfortably, breathable clothing and good shoes are not a luxury. Before you know it, you will get the hang of it and walking will become a nice routine.

Hiking: how to make it fun

Are you disappointed by hiking, or do you secretly find it a bit boring? You can make your walk more fun by listening to podcasts for example. Here are some podcasts that have to do with the theme “Hiking”. Listening to them will make you cover 2km before you know it! Walking for longer is suddenly more fun. Also, don’t walk the same route over and over again, but choose a different route each time on this website.

Variation ensures that it doesn’t get boring and that you keep seeing new things. The Netherlands has so many beautiful natural areas that are well worth discovering. If you have trouble keeping up with walking, walking together with a friend, girlfriend or partner can also be a good idea. It’s fun and you can make appointments together about when you’re going to walk. And keep each other to it. That way you have a big stick.

Choose your walking target

Keep track of your steps for a week. This will give you insight into how much you move in a day. You can do this with the Google Fit app (Android) or Health app (iOS) on your phone. Do you struggle to get to 3,000 steps a day, or do you easily hit 10,000 steps a day? Set goals for yourself that you want to achieve. For example, take more steps in a day, or walk at least three times a half hour each week. A walking schedule can be useful for this. Write down for yourself the reason why you want to start walking more, e.g. lose weight, and regularly remind yourself of this motivation. How many calories do you actually burn by walking without medicine.
